Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Learn the best times to plant arborvitae, how to prevent winter burn, whether you should trim them, and everything else you need to know to grow them like a pro.
Ordered 32 of them, not looking like they are going to make it - yellowing and browning after a little over a week. My maple trees are going great, but the Arborvitae's are sad. Digging deeper it looks like others had issues with pot-bound roots - might've been what happened to these poor trees. Not the best way to spend a lot of time and about a $1,000 after it was all said and done.
They delivered exactly as expected and all the plants were healthy and well packed for shipping. I just wish I had known that they would be eaten by the hungry deer near us. What is the point of a privacy hedge if you have to build a fence to protect it from deer? Might as well build a privacy fence!
We're sorry that the deer enjoyed your plants before you could. Young plants are especially susceptible to deer damage, so we highly recommend protecting new plants in areas with high deer traffic. All orders are covered by our 60-day guarantee, so please send your order number and pictures of your plants to claims@greatgardenplants.com to start the claims process. We look forward to helping!
