Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

How To Grow Soil: Coral bells like a neutral to slightly acid soil pH, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas.
Light: As a general rule, Heucheras do well in the shade, but some morning sun will bring out more intense coloring. Too much light will cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but not consistently wet to prevent root rot. To reduce the risk of foliar disease, water Heuchera during the early morning so excess moisture can evaporate by evening.
Spacing: 20" apart
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is generally unnecessary unless the soil is nutrient depleted. Consider applying compost to provide nutrients and organic matter. Avoid any fertilization in fall and winter.
Winterizing: Winter mulching will prevent the freezing and thawing that can kill plant roots.
Maintenance & pruning: Cut back the entire flower stalk after flowering to put the plant's energy into growing more leaves. Divide coral bells every 3-5 years to keep them from dying out in the center.

Disappointed, hugely underwhelmed

I've ordered more than $1,000 in plants over the past couple of springs... and I want to love this site because they do have beautiful plants available, but I need to just wait & buy my plants from the big box stores locally, as much as I hate to say it. Same brand, same plants, but the plants I've gotten from Great Garden Plants have been substantially smaller & significantly more expensive. Plus, my big box stores come with a 1 year guarantee. Oh well, lesson learned. These plants are tiny & struggling out of the box, and even with a 20% coupon, I'm paying way more than I would pay for a larger/healthier (same Proven Winners brand) plant at Lowe's. It's just frustrating.

In the pictures, the smaller, itty bitty sad plants with the red stickers are from Great Garden Plants... the big one in the center was from Lowe's & it was $12. Even the heuchera varieties from WM were bigger & healthier, for less than $6. Sorry. I just can't justify it...

I will say, I did order an Oakleaf hydrangea & paid a premium for it, and it was very pretty & healthy. Hopefully it does well.

Wild rose coral bells

Arrived sad and wilted but recovered nicely.

Ordered four varieties of Coral Bells and a couple of shade lover plants. They’ve been in the ground 1-2 weeks and all look healthy. I had not ordered plants online before. I couldn’t find any Coral Bells in my area so I took a chance. I did not expect these to look like a full pot at the nursery or garden store. They are small and just an individual plant, but were healthy in appearance. The soil the plants arrive in dries out very fast, so be sure to water often.
