More Information

Description Lush, green summer foliage transitions to a vibrant red in the fall, making Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) a popular clinging vine. Short tendrils easily grip surfaces, making climbing a breeze. Plant near walls, trellises, arbors, or fences to create a gorgeous backdrop for your garden. It also serves as a groundcover. While Boston ivy is known for the leaves, it also grows small green blooms and dark-colored berries that attract birds. We love how quickly this perennial grows. If left alone, it will grow up to 50 feet tall! Let this plant rule your landscape, or keep it in control with annual pruning and sheering. Details Botanical Name: Parthenocissus tricuspidata
Common Name: Boston Ivy
Zone: 4 - 8
Sun Exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x Width: 30-50' x 5-10'
Flower Color: Green
Foliage Color: Dark green, orange, red
Season of interest: Summer through fall
Uses: Cottage gardening, ground cover, privacy, erosion control, vines and climbers
How To Grow Soil: Well-drained, loamy soil
Light: Sun to part-sun
Water: Water needs are average.
Spacing: Vines are vigorous and rapid growers and can grow to 50 ft high and 10 ft wide, so space generously.
Fertilizing: While fertilizing is unnecessary, if you have infertile soil, you may apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring as new growth develops.
Winterizing: Boston ivy winter care is minimal and consists primarily of pruning. Young vines may appreciate extra mulching, but they are generally hardy.
Maintenance & Pruning: Prune the vines once each year (in late winter) to control the rapid growth. The vines respond well to pruning, so have no fear!

Bought Three. All Thriving.

I bought three of these Boston Ivy plants to grow along a short wall. They took a while to get settled then took off. My Dad cut one down thinking they were weeds (Thanks Dad), but that one recovered quickly. I love their Fall color the most and may consider growing on my brick house. It will take a while for them to mature and cover the whole wall, but that is expected.

Thriving

I bought 8 plants for my wooden yard fence. They showed up in great condition, and they are thriving after 2 weeks in the ground. I would say they have at least doubled in size and I have vines making a bee line for the fence...very satisfied.

Ivy Plants Growing Nicely

I bought the Boston Ivy in July to grow on a trellis to ever a fence. Plants arrived in good order. I watered them and let the rest a day or so and them planted. All the plants are sending out multiple vines. Very Pleased.
