Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

'Golden Magic' gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) adds instant elegance to your garden thanks to its white blooms that age to a buttery yellow and slender, evergreen foliage. Thanks to its low-growing nature, this compact gardenia looks excellent in a container; try planting it on your patio so you can enjoy its sweet fragrance. Grows well in sun/part sun, and shade. Uses: Flower gardens, Wildlife gardens, Native plant gardens How To Grow Soil: Gardenias need moist but well-drained soil; they don't tolerate dry conditions, particularly when they are in bloom. They also prefer soil to be on the acidic side and benefit from a good layer of mulch to keep the roots cool.
Light: Full sun to part shade
Water: Average moisture is preferred. Plants will do best if they get supplemental irrigation, particularly during hot, dry weather.
Spacing: 3 feet
Fertilizing: Apply a granular flowering shrub or rose fertilizer in early spring and again in late spring if desired.
Winterizing: For the best-looking foliage, plant gardenias out of the path of strong, drying winds. They benefit from a good 3" layer of shredded bark mulch.
Maintenance & pruning: Little pruning is required; prune after the main bloom in late spring if desired. If you wish to grow gardenias indoors, they must be placed in very cool, very bright conditions, and should not be allowed to dry out. A sunroom, conservatory, or enclosed porch is far preferable to normal indoor conditions. Plants should be moved outdoors during warm weather for best results.

I recieved my plant in excellent shape. Doubled its size already and very healthy. I cant wait for it to bloom.

Wonderful plant

This gardenia did well over the winter under a hood made of permeable landscape fabric. For now I have it potted, and though temps are in the low 90's it's still doing beautifully. I've repotted it once, and I plan to keep it potted until next spring. Watering it twice a day when it's like this. It hasn't bloomed yet, but it is green and full and healthy. It seems to like our climate here in the PNW. Thank you for these gorgeous plants!
