More Information

Description Have you ever seen anything like it? 'Oddity' is a truly weird and wild hens and chicks (Sempervivum tectorum), but it's just as easy to grow and reliable as the ordinary ones. Instead of flat leaves like most, each succulent leaf is a tubular shape tipped with red. Creating a plethora of unusual shapes when your hen starts spreading and creating chicks, you can expect a one-of-a-kind spectacle; no two 'Oddity' plants are alike! This makes for a unique addition to your containers, rock gardens, or tucked into a tight space in your landscape! Reliably hardy, deer-resistant sempervivum will continue to thrive in almost any condition as long as it's getting sun and at home in well-drained soil. Sempervivum comes from the Latin words semper meaning "always" and vivus meaning "alive" or "living." Aptly named, this plant will be always be living with next to no care on your end. Just sit back and enjoy as 'Oddity' transforms your landscape into a spectacular succulent display! Details Botanical Name: Sempervivum tectorum 'Oddity'
Common Name: Hens and chicks, houseleek
Zone: 4-9
Sun Exposure: Sun (6+ Hours)
Height x Width: 2-3" x 4-6"
Flower Color: White or Pink
Foliage Color: Green, Red tips
Season of Interest: Year-Round
Uses: Alpine & Rock, Container Gardening, Edging, Ground Cover, Rock Garden, Small Spaces, Under Planting.
How To Grow Soil: Very well-drained, even dry, soil is imperative for success with hens and chicks. Nothing will do them in faster than soggy conditions, so plant only in soils that are never wet for any lengthy period of time. Little volume of soil is needed; sempervivum will grow in rocky crevices, cracks, walls, between paving stones, and in shallow containers.
Light: Full sun - at least 6 hours/day - is recommended. Very light shade may be okay in hot climates.
Water: Immediately after transplanting, water generously. After that, let the soil dry out between watering. Once established, sempervivum is very drought tolerant, requiring little to no supplemental watering.
Spacing: 6" - 12" to start - plants will soon fill in and knit together.
Fertilizing: None needed.
Winterizing: No special care needed.
Maintenance & Pruning: Once a hen plant produces a chick, that chick will begin creating its own chicks the following year. Large hen plants eventually grow a tall flower stalk and die after blooming. However, this is no cause for concern as by the time it does this, it will have left behind a large colony of chicks to take its place. Cutting off the center, stalk will not prevent the plant from dying. Chicks can be left in place or plucked out and relocated to expand your display.
