Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Considering the plants I received were Proven Winners, I expected more. Root systems were not established and plants are not thriving. They do offer a 90 day guarantee which is good. Currently, one plant looks like a twig with one spot of green not what picture looks like.
Hi Irene. I'm sorry you received plants that are not up to our standards. I see you are aware of our guarantee, please email pictures of the plants to email@example.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line. It REALLY does not want to dry out, in the hottest part of the Summer (high 90's) I planted these and they definitely fussed about it, pouted, acted like they were going to shrivel up and die. Once I got them established though, they started thriving. No blooms yet but that foliage is gorgeous!!!
Received in great condition planted in mid May … has been filling in nicely but no flowers yet… hope to get some this season ;)
Although packaging was secure, all plants moist and pretty much intact.. There is little hope for the Astilbe. Leaves are completely brown, crispy. At first opening, I thought mildew, they were more blackish. Mouse hosta kind of had same mildewy look, but improved. After a day the Astilbe turned brown, almost see-through and super dry crispy. Very sad.
