Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

They came packaged perfectly and already thriving in the ground. Would definitely buy from them again
I never realized the impact of mail travel on plants! How well they are packaged really determines their survival!
My first little friend’ did not survive the travel conditions, even though I followed post trauma guidelines. Although I did communicate my concerns with a photo included, I was excited to hear another specimen was being sent!
Upon arrival, I realized a few things: 1. My initial plant sent was either to young or a poor specimen to start with 2. I only know this because the 2nd one was healthier and a little larger 3. Even with the improved specimen, I’ll still need to consider future sells or buying locally at a Lowe’s or Home Depot.
Why? Survival of the plant during travel! I would ask that packaging be reevaluated. Perhaps a notation such as: fragile handle with care or keep this side up? Perhaps the internal container can be secured (stapled, taped) in place to help ensure a greater stability for the plant?
My final thoughts are that I’ll have to wait and see if this one survives. The price wasn’t cheap for the plant, but I’d like to see mine survive better through the travel process. Still waiting in Atlanta!

I've ordered more than $1,000 in plants over the past couple of springs... and I want to love this site because they do have beautiful plants available, but I need to just wait & buy my plants from the big box stores locally, as much as I hate to say it. Same brand, same plants, but the plants I've gotten from Great Garden Plants have been substantially smaller & significantly more expensive. Plus, my big box stores come with a 1 year guarantee. Oh well, lesson learned. These plants are tiny & struggling out of the box, and even with a 20% coupon, I'm paying way more than I would pay for a larger/healthier (same Proven Winners brand) plant at Lowe's. It's just frustrating.
In the pictures, the smaller, itty bitty sad plants with the red stickers are from Great Garden Plants... the big one in the center was from Lowe's & it was $12. Even the heuchera varieties from WM were bigger & healthier, for less than $6. Sorry. I just can't justify it...
I will say, I did order an Oakleaf hydrangea & paid a premium for it, and it was very pretty & healthy. Hopefully it does well.
Hello! We are so sorry that you're unsatisfied with your plants. We do note on our website, the sizes of our plants in order to minimize confusion. https://www.greatgardenplants.com/pages/sizes Our customer service team would love to hear from you regarding your experience with our brand, and the plants you received. The size and maturity of the plants varies widely depending on the time of the year you purchased and if they were recently trimmed. The important thing when it comes to purchasing plants, whether online or in a garden center, is that they have a full, robust root system, and that's what we prioritize in our greenhouses. The more roots a plant has, the more energy it can put into growing once it is planted in your garden. We do keep our plants trimmed to encourage strong root development! Please email photos of the plants to claims@greatgardenplants.com with your order number in the subject line, so that we may provide the best assistance possible.
Rest assured, we have a 60-day guarantee on all our plants. Happy Gardening!

Arrived sad and wilted but recovered nicely.
Ordered four varieties of Coral Bells and a couple of shade lover plants. They’ve been in the ground 1-2 weeks and all look healthy. I had not ordered plants online before. I couldn’t find any Coral Bells in my area so I took a chance. I did not expect these to look like a full pot at the nursery or garden store. They are small and just an individual plant, but were healthy in appearance. The soil the plants arrive in dries out very fast, so be sure to water often.
