Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Ornamental grasses are invaluable additions to the landscape, but we don’t think they get enough credit. They rustle in the breeze, produce plumes of flowers, and add interest through the winter. What’s not to love? No matter the unique landscape goal, these ornamental grasses are approved by Great Garden Plants horticulturists to be a great addition to your garden.
The switchgrass was very well packaged and healthy. I ordered two plants and they are doing beautifully. I am very pleased.
My order arrived in very good condition. Plants were green and healthy.
Literally just delivered. They came in well wrapped and protected in the box, the plants look heathy and to be in good shape. I won’t be planting them for a week or two, so I broke the roots up a little, transplanted them into bigger pots, with good drainage holes, added some potting soil and watered them. Then left them out side in an area that gets full sun. I will update the review once they are in the ground.
I'd been looking for this particular panicum for months and all of my usual sources couldn't get it. I found it on Great Garden Plants and bought three of them. They were well priced -- competitive with a retail nursery for this particular panicum. The plants arrived quickly and they were healthy and vigorous-looking. While not root bound, their roots had filled in the quart container they arrived in and that tells me that they'd been in that container for a decent amount of time. That's a good thing. I planted them immediately and in the month-and-a-half that they've been in the ground they have doubled in size. I am anxiously awaiting their color change this fall and I cannot wait to see them come back in the spring. I am very happy with this purchase and very happy that I found Great Garden Plants.
Ordered in spring but had to wait til July due to growing conditions for the shipper - but had excellent communications on whether I wanted to wait for it or get a refund. I waited and received a nice but young grass plant. Because my design plans changed while waiting, I half buried the pot on top of my strawberry tower and promptly forgot about it. To my surprise, when I rescued it today (mid-Aug), the roots had happily grown beyond the pot, the seed heads were forming and overall developing into a nice form. It's now planted where it's grassy shape can be admired. Seems bomb-proof to me. Looking forward to the fall colors on it.
