Abelia Funshine® Description

We can’t decide what we love most about Funshine abelia – the bright golden foliage or the abundance of purple blooms. It’s the total package, and an ideal way to bring vivacious color to even a shady spot in your garden. Enjoy months of bloom from late spring through fall, with bell-like flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Like other abelias, it’s quite a tough plant, growing well even in dry shade, and is unbothered by deer, rabbits, or other pests.

Funshine abelia is colorful enough to be planted on its own in a flower garden, but it's especially effective planted in groups of 3 or 5 to form a low hedge or bring contrasting color to your home's landscape.

Special Features: Attracts butterflies, Attracts hummingbirds, Shade tolerant, Deer resistant, Long blooming, Heat tolerant, Rabbit resistant

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil:  Any average soil will do; avoid extreme wet or dry conditions. Though it can tolerate some drought, performance is best with regular water.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day) to part shade (4-6 hours/day)
Water:  Moderate moisture; tolerates dry conditions once established, but flowering is best when not stressed
Space:  4' apart
Fertilizing:  Seldom needed; apply a granular garden or rose fertilizer in early spring if desired
Winterizing:  A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended. In colder areas, site away from strong winds.
Maintenance:  Blooms on new wood, so can be pruned in spring if desired. However, it naturally takes on a graceful, fountain-like habit that does not require regular pruning. Any errant growth can be removed as needed.
