Abelia Ruby Anniversary® Description

Here's a plant that deserves to be better known and more widely grown: Ruby Anniversary abelia (Abelia chinensis) from Proven Winners ColorChoice Shrubs. What's so great about it? For one, it's powerfully fragrant, releasing a sweet perfume that carries on the warm summer breezes. The white, bell-shaped flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and the late summer-early autumn bloom time provides an abundant food source at this crucial point in the season. When they fall, they leave behind a brilliant ruby-pink bract for an extra boost of color!

Like other abelias, it grows and blooms well even in shade, tolerates dry soil, and is unbothered by deer and rabbits. Unlike other summer-blooming abelias, however, Ruby Anniversary is hardy to USDA zone 5, a significant expansion of the areas where this useful flowering shrub can grow.

Special Features: Attracts butterflies, Attracts hummingbirds, Shade tolerant, Deer resistant, Long blooming, Heat tolerant, Rabbit resistant

Winterizing:  A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended. In colder areas, site away from strong winds.
Maintenance:  Ruby Anniversary abelia blooms on new wood, so can be pruned in spring if desired. However, it naturally takes on a graceful, fountain-like habit that does not require regular pruning.
