Aruncus dioicus - goatsbeard Description

Nothing is more beautiful than the elegant, feathery creamy-white flower spikes of Goatsbeard or Aruncus dioicus in early summer.

This immense shade perennial has beautiful foliage as well. Aruncus slowly spreads to form a dense clump that can reach 5 feet or more.  This plant works well as a hedge plant for shade, or as a backdrop to hydrangeas, hostas, ferns, and other shade loving plants.

Soil: Best grown in moist, fertile, organically rich soils. Tolerant of both acid to akaline soils.
Light: Full sun to part shade. It prefers part shade in the warmer, southern part of its growing range.
Water: Medium to wet. Foliage decline can occur rapidly if soils are permitted to dry out.
Spacing: Plant 2-4 ft apart
Fertilizing: Apply a slow release fertilizer like "Osmocote" in spring.
Winterizing: Stems of the plants should be cut back to the level of the ground in the autumn.
Maintenance & pruning: Can collect seed from dry plants, and direct sow outdoors in fall. Removing faded flower stalks will not prolong bloom. If you require more plants, then they can be divided once established to supply more plants. Division only required every 10 years or more. Divide in spring or autumn. The roots are very deep and woody, and division can be a difficult task. Pruning is not necessary, except to remove damaged or unattractive foliage.
