Athyrium n. 'Crested Surf' Description
A must-have for your fern collection! This new perennial, the first fern from Proven Winners, tops its each of its colorful fronds with a curly little flourish known as a crest. 'Crested Surf' Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum) looks like some kind of magical seaweed - but this plant will be right at home in your shade garden. Sage-green and white leaflets are neatly arranged along a purple stem, a color cue that makes it ideal for pairing with plum-colored heuchera. We've never seen anything quite like it and are so excited to be able to offer it this year.
Special features: Shade tolerant, unique, deer resistant, rabbit resistant, cut stem, easy to grow

PLANTING GUIDE
Soil: Well-drained but rich in organic matter.
Light: Part shade to full shade - Best silvery frond color occurs in light shade. Too much sun often results in a bleaching of the attractive frond colors.
Water: Tolerates more soil dryness than some other ferns in this genus, but soil must not be allowed to dry out.
Spacing: 1.5 - 2 ft apart
Fertilizing: None required.
Winterizing: Nothing special required.
Maintenance & pruning: The previous season's leaves should be trimmed to the ground in early spring. Do this before new growth begins, or the process will be tricky to do well.Reviews
