Buddleia Pugster Blue® Description
This prolific beauty has a solid, smaller frame that most other butterfly bush, growing only 24" tall and wide and bringing a whole new style to small spaces.
You've probably never seen such lavish blooms lasting up to 5 months! Ultra thick, plump blooms on sturdy stems are showstopping in a hard-to-find true blue color. Butterflies, bees & hummingbirds find their distinct honey fragrance irresistible. What a wonderful fragrant cut flower to add to bouquets. Deer & rabbits stay away.
Buddleias are a much loved flowering shrub and should be on your checklist if you are planning on all season perennial garden. Although very slow to break dormancy, once weather starts to warm they are quick to grow.
Drought tolerant once established. Butterfly bush is easy to grow as it needs no deadheading required for continuous bloom. They appreciate full sun and well drained soil. Flowers are sterile so there are no unwanted seedlings.

Soil: Butterfly bushes require very well-drained, even dry, soils. Do not amend or add anything to the soil at planting time, as this can cause serious drainage problems. In clay soil, plant butterfly bush so they are slightly above, rather than even with, the soil.
Light: Full sun - at least six hours of bright sun each day is necessary for healthy plants and abundant blooms.
Water: Low to average watering; soil can even be dry once established. Butterfly bush do not tolerate wet conditions for any period of time.
Spacing: 3 to 4 feet
Fertilizing: Little needed; if desired, apply a granular rose or garden fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing:In fall, plants can be trimmed lightly if desired, but save major pruning for spring. Do not fertilize in fall, and if mulching, do not apply heavily at the base of the plant.
Maintenance & pruning: Butterfly bushes are best pruned in spring, once the new growth has begun to emerge. At that point, cut just above where big, healthy buds appear. Give butterfly bushes plenty of time to emerge in spring, especially in colder climates - this may take several weeks, even if other plants in your yard are already leafing out.
ReviewsWrite a reviewLove it but order had a mistakeSusan Brinkley | Jul 14, 2019Help! I ordered 3 of the blue Pugsters. Now that all are in the planting bed and blooming, one of the 3 turns out not to blue and likely isn't the Pugster variety. The two blues are nicely compact and covered with flowers; the 3rd plant has a magenta flower and is growing taller than the Pugster Blues. I have taken it out of the ground and put it in a pot until I figure out what to do with the one misfit. Not so much bothered by the color being wrong (although I did want a mass of blue in the new perennial bed) as by my suspicion that this is a larger Buddleia and maybe not the sterile hybrid I did... I left a phone message and an email and haven't had a reply yet. Eager to have the 3rd Pugster Blue I ordered before they are sold out!Owner Response: Hello Susan - I believe that Amy has taken care of this issue and we are sending the correct Buddleia Pugster Blue this fall, when temperatures are cooler. Please let me know if you need further assistance. --- Pam
