PLANTING GUIDE
Soil: Wet soil is the biggest threat to butterfly bush; plant only in well-drained spots. In clay soils, do not amend the soil with anything at planting time, and plant the butterfly bush so it's slightly above, rather than even with, the soil surface.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day).
Water: Err on the side of under-watering, rather than over-watering, butterfly bush
Space: Min. 2' apart
Fertilizing: Little fertilizer is needed. If little new growth emerges in spring, a bit of granular rose fertilizer can help it rebound more quickly.
Winterizing: Do not apply a thick layer of mulch – any mulch that is present should be thin or absent closest to the plant. In cold climates, leave intact through fall to help minimize any winter dieback.
Maintenance: Wait until you see new growth emerge in spring before cutting back. At that point, remove any dead wood, cutting just above where new growth is emerging. Butterfly bush does not need to be deadheaded for continuous bloom.Reviews
