Soil: Bluebeard requires well-drained, even dry, soils. Thrives in the same kind of spots as butterfly bush.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day).
Water: Low to moderate – bluebeard does not tolerate wet soil or overwatering
Space: Min. 2.5' apart
Fertilizing: Little fertilizer is needed.
Winterizing: Leave plant intact over winter (you can give it a light trim to remove the seedheads if desired). Do not apply a thick layer of mulch in the winter, as it requires dry conditions, particularly during cold weather.
Maintenance: Wait until new growth begins to emerge in spring to prune. Cut back to just above where large, healthy buds are emerging. Don't be afraid to cut back quite hard, leaving stubs of just a few inches tall – that keeps the plant dense and compact.
