Caryopteris Sunshine Blue® II Description

Sunshine Blue® II blue mist spirea (also called bluebeard, caryopteris, or Caryopteris incana) is a new and improved version of the classic Sunshine Blue® variety, with improved tolerance to cold weather.  It's an excellent plant for attracting pollinators - bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds adore it! It is the hardiest caryopteris yet, shrugging off even cold Midwestern winters.  Sunshine Blue® II bluebeard boasts attractive bright gold foliage that makes an eye-popping contrast with the dark blue flowers in late summer and fall.

Rugged and low maintenance, caryopteris is ideal for the mixed perennial border or as a low growing hedge plant.

Sunshine Blue II® caryopteris is a Proven Winners® Color Choice Plant selection.  To be included in this select group, plants must pass rigorous testing & evaluation.

This colorful shrub combines well with any other sun-loving perennials, and we especially like it with ornamental grasses, 'Flamenco' torch lily, or coreopsis.

Special features: Attracts butterflies, Drought tolerant, Deer resistant, Easy care, Fragrant, Attracts hummingbirds, Long blooming

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Well-drained soil is a must. Tolerates dry conditions once established.
Light: Full sun
Water: Low to moderate. Tolerates some drought. Intolerant of wet, poorly-drained soils.
Spacing: 3 feet
Fertilizing: None needed. If you wish, apply a granular garden or rose fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: Stems will often die to the ground in the cold winters of Zones 5 and 6, with roots surviving to push up new stems in spring.
Maintenance & pruning: In spring, when the new growth begins to emerge on the stems, cut back to just above where big, healthy buds are emerging. The plant may be cut back by up to two-thirds its total height, but will recover as long as there are living buds below the cut. This approach keeps the plant dense and tidy, and prevents it from splaying out or cracking.
