Convallaria majalis - Lily of the Valley Description

The delightful fragrance of lily of the valley can take you right back to your childhood. Recreate those memories and make new ones with a patch of your own! Though its flowers look delicate and its scent is sophisticated, it's actually an extremely tough plant that readily fills in difficult spots, including dry shade. Waxy blue-green leaves keep their color all season (provided they get enough water) and come spring, stalks of dainty bell-shaped white flowers emerge. Their fragrance perfumes the entire yard on a sunny spring day! Plus, you can cut all you want to bring indoors - there's always lots of flowers.

Lily of the valley resists deer, rabbits, and other pests. It fills in quickly to transform difficult areas into low maintenance swaths of green.

Soil: Evenly moist, humus rich soil.
Light: Grows well in morning sun to full shade, in all but the driest of spots. In hot afternoon sun, it will need moist soil or the leaves will burn, but in the shade occasional water is sufficient.
Water: Moderate, prefers even moisture. Can tolerate dry conditions but often goes dormant early (though it will return the following season without fail).
Spacing: 24" apart.
Fertilizing: Grow in well-drained soil that is moderately fertile and humus-rich. We do not recommend fertilizing at planting time, or during the first growing season. In successive years, if soil is poorer in quality, and light scattering of slow release fertilizer in spring should be sufficient.
Winterizing: Keep old foliage over winter to protect crowns. After the ground freezes, apply a loose layer of oak leaves, pine boughs, or straw. You can gradually remove mulch, and cut back old foliage in early spring.
Maintenance & pruning: Little maintenance is needed; if plant spreads beyond desired area, dig extra plants out. Divide as necessary.
