Dianthus Frosty Fire Description

Infused Fragrance! Lavish evergreen foliage & blooms!  Heat Tolerant & Deer Proof!

Border Pinks are hardy perennials and a relative to the Carnation. Evergreen grassy mats of narrow leaved blue foliage that do not rot out like older types.   Enjoy year round texture and foliage color - even in snow!

In late spring or early summer, short 6 inch stems display double-layered and deeply notched showstopping red blooms. You'll enjoy unforgetable fragrance on prolific blooms!

Prized for retaining its shape and color, they are highly desirable border or rock garden plants and small enough for tight spaces. You won't want to miss the perfumery so we recommended a planting near patios and pathways where they will be enjoyed.  Grows 6-8 inches tall and 8 inches wide.  Although short-stemmed, they are easy to cut for fragrant bouquets to place around the home.

How To Grow

Plant in full sun to part shade in well drained soil. It prefers average to moist conditions.  It prefers a neutral-to alkaline ph and does well in areas of urban pollution. Unfazed by humidity or brutal heat of summer (even in the south).  They appreciate about an inch of water a week to do well.  By cutting blooms, it often repeats a lighter flowering performance by fall.

How to Design with Dianthus

Compact enough to fit into almost any sun loving setting. Place near patios, walkways, or other sitting areas where you can take in the perfumery. Plant in large groupings, and enjoy year round sea of blue.  One of the elements of good garden design is using plants that impart colorful foliage color - and you can't go wrong with Dianthus.

Plant in pots and containers. As foliage grows, it eventually will spill over the sides of pots-and how pretty is that.  Pair with dark-hued and sun loving Heuchera Obsidian for a stop-in-your tracks look!  Plant near the base of yellow flowering Knock Out Roses or upright Sedums.  As the tightly packed foliage fills in, you'll admire how it keeps the weeds down while remaining neat and tidy year-round!

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Neutral to alkaline well drained loam or sand.
Light: Full sun is preferred but will tolerate part shade though the blooms might not be as prolific.
Water: Average water needs. Drought tolerant once established, but should be watered regularly during extended drought conditions.
Spacing: 12 inches
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, timed release fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: Remove all the dead and fallen plant matter so that diseases do not overwinter in it. A four inch mulch layer of straw or pine boughs will help protect the soil temperature, and keep the frost from heaving the roots. Remove the mulch in spring when they begin actively growing again.
Maintenance & Pruning: Little to no pruning or maintenance needed. Deadheading is highly recommended to promote a re flush of flowers. Clumps can be divided every 2 or 3 years to encourage better flower production.
