More Information

Description Even in hot climates, you can count on 'Paint the Town Magenta' dianthus from Proven Winners to bloom its heart out in the garden. But its exceptional heat tolerance isn't the only thing that makes it special: it's also exceptionally floriferous, its blue-green foliage positively smothered with neat little flowers. Their color is so bright as to practically glow in the landscape, and the deep violet center of each flower adds to the effect. These dianthus are ideal additions to rock gardens, flower gardens, and landscaping, and their neat evergreen foliage is very nice along the edge of a path or garden bed. It's truly a high-performance plant in both cold and hot climates. Details Botanical name: Dianthus 'Paint the Town Magenta'
Common name: Dianthus, pinks, carnation
Patient: USPP 22,922
Zone: 4 - 9
Sun exposure: Part sun (4-6 hours/day) to full sun (6+ hours/day)
Height x width: 6-8" X 12-14"
Flower color: Pink
Foliage color: Blue-green
Season of interest: Late spring-early summer
Bloom time: Early summer, early fall
Features: Proven Winners, ground covers, deer resistant, container plants, best for beginners
Uses: Alpine and rock, container gardening, cottage gardening, edging, erosion control, ground cover, massing, rock garden, slopes, small spaces, under planting
How To Grow Soil: Dianthus aren't particularly fussy about soil, though they do require good drainage.
Light: Full sun is preferred; can grow in part shade, though the blooms will not be as prolific.
Water: Average water needs.
Drought tolerant once established, but should be watered regularly during periods of hot, dry weather.
Spacing: 12 inches
Fertilizing: Nothing special required; one application of garden fertilizer in early spring is sufficient.
Winterizing: Remove all the dead and fallen plant matter to prevent the risk of rot or damage. Evergreen perennial may look a bit tatty coming out of harsh winters, but will recover as spring begins.
Maintenance & pruning:
Little to no pruning or maintenance needed. Though deadheading is not required, it will encourage additional flower production. Cut blooms as desired to use in arrangements.

Dianthus love it!

I ordered five of these. They came with an order of a lot of other things and everything was very well packaged. I've had them in now for over a month and they're taking off and blooming like crazy. I'm hoping that they will spread. If not I will be getting another order next year. Get lots of compliments

Beautiful

Planting around the edge of the garden is beautiful. Absolutely love these dianthus. Adds do much color.

Paint The Town Magenta Dianthus

They are alive but not thriving. It does not have the same leaf as my other perennial dianthus. The jury is still out on this one.

Stunning!!!

I bought 6 of these last Autumn (2020) and planted in a narrow bed in the front of the garden in front of my home for a pop of color. I was attracted by the stunning magenta color and the gray/blue/green foliage. They were dormant, so no flowers, but looked healthy and were of reasonable size for a mail order purchase. They looked satisfactory through the Autumn and they survived the nasty North Texas (snowmageddon) winter. Grateful I was patient, because when Spring arrived they really put on a show! Doubled in size and completely covered in those gorgeous flowers. I couldn't be happier!!

wanted to love these!

The plant is tiny and has hardly grown and it is right next to other plants in my garden that have tripped in size. I gave them to my mom for mothers day as well so it is super disappointing. Not sure what the issue is but unfortunately I would not order again.
