Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

I have not received this order as of 09-11-23
I'm been very happy with the majority of my 2023 GGP purchases, but this is a notable exception. I ordered 7 Sweetie Pies and they are all very leggy and scraggly-looking. Not even close to the tidy clump of the Fruit Punch "Black Cherry" dianthus I also ordered from GGP. I suspect they weren't pruned correctly. Sweetie Pie's little blooms are nice, but the plants look like they came from a forgotten corner of a big box store garden section. Not the GGP quality I've come to expect.

after 2 of my dianthus died I thought that I would have a flower on the other one.It only has one little flower on it. maybe it will be better next season .hope so
Hello! We're sorry to hear that you've had some trouble with your dianthus. They are a spring blooming plant, so you really shouldn't be seeing blooms this time of year. Also, keep in mind that when transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. We hope this helps.
In regards to the plants that have died, please email pictures of the plant to claims@greatgardenplants.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible.
