More Information

Description Fruit Punch® 'Sweetie Pie' dianthus (Dianthus hybrid) is covered in sweet pink blooms that are just like miniature carnations. 'Sweetie Pie'  is sun-loving; plant it in a sunny spot in your garden and watch this hardy and heat tolerant perennial shine! Long blooming and an excellent cut flower, dianthus looks fantastic in the garden and a vase. Its attractive spiky blue foliage makes an ideal edging or flower garden plant. Details Botanical name: Dianthus 'Sweetie Pie'
Patent #: USPP 27,989
Common name: pinks
Zone: 4 – 9
Sun exposure: Sun (> 6 hours sun)
Height x width: 10" X 12-14"
Flower color: Pink
Foliage color: Blue-green
Season of interest: Late spring - early summer
Bloom time: Spring, summer
Features: Suitable for slopes, space savers, Proven Winners, low flammability, ground covers, deer resistant, container plants, best or beginners
Uses: Alpine and rock, container gardening, Cottage gardening, edging, erosion control, ground cover, massing, rock garden, small spaces, under planting
How To Grow Soil: Neutral to alkaline well drained loam or sand.
Light: Full sun is preferred but will tolerate part shade though the blooms might not be as prolific.
Water: Average water needs. Drought tolerant once established, but should be watered regularly during extended drought conditions.
Spacing: 14 inches
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, timed release fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: Remove all the dead and fallen plant matter so that diseases do not overwinter in it. A four inch mulch layer of straw or pine boughs will help protect the soil temperature, and keep the frost from heaving the roots. Remove the mulch in spring when they begin actively growing again.
Maintenance & pruning: Little to no pruning or maintenance needed. Deadheading is highly recommended to promote a flush of flowers. Clumps can be divided every 2 or 3 years to encourage better flower production.

Now I know why they were on sale

I'm been very happy with the majority of my 2023 GGP purchases, but this is a notable exception. I ordered 7 Sweetie Pies and they are all very leggy and scraggly-looking. Not even close to the tidy clump of the Fruit Punch "Black Cherry" dianthus I also ordered from GGP. I suspect they weren't pruned correctly. Sweetie Pie's little blooms are nice, but the plants look like they came from a forgotten corner of a big box store garden section. Not the GGP quality I've come to expect.

disappointed

after 2 of my dianthus died I thought that I would have a flower on the other one.It only has one little flower on it. maybe it will be better next season .hope so

Hello! We're sorry to hear that you've had some trouble with your dianthus. They are a spring blooming plant, so you really shouldn't be seeing blooms this time of year. Also, keep in mind that when transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development. They generally spend their first year growing roots in their new home, the second year they have more energy to put into growth, and the third year, they are growing and flowering vigorously. This applies to plants in the garden center as well as plants you purchase online. We hope this helps.

In regards to the plants that have died, please email pictures of the plant to claims@greatgardenplants.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible. Rest assured, we do have a 60-day guarantee on all of our plants. If you received your plants within that timeframe, we will be happy to apply your warranty once we receive the pictures. Happy Gardening!
