Dogwood (Red Twig) Arctic Fire® Description

Red Twig Dogwood provides year round landscaping interest. Probably best known for their peak stem color in winter and spring, they also provide ornamental value in the garden during the spring-fall. Grows in sun and part shade.  The best bark color is produced in more sun. They are ideal for mass plantings, hedges and borders.

Hard working shrub. Cornus can grow in wet areas and tolerate clay soil as well as a wide range of growing conditions. They can briefly tolerate standing water. Their deep penetrating root system make them ideal for banks or areas of erosion

Compact habit - with no suckering. Does not sucker like other varieties. Handsome multi-stemmed plant is 1/2 the height but twice the width of typical dogwoods  growing 3-5 feet tall and wide.

Spring/Summer.  White flowers bloom in summer against green foliage.  Blooms on old wood, so prune directly after flowering. Blooms also can be cut for arrangements.

Fall.  Dark purple berries are produced in late summer and last well into fall. Foliage turns a warm gold color.

Winter/Spring.  Main branches grow upright sticking up high enough to enjoy thru the winter snow when there is little to nothing happening in the garden.  Red winter stems can be cut for positively delightful winter arrangements.  When the sun shines - they stems really glow!

Deer, Rabbit & Disease Resistance.  This superior disease resistance shrub is not favored by deer or rabbits. If some chewing does occur, plants recover quickly.

Enjoyed by Wildlife.  Fruit is enjoyed by songbirds. Nectar and pollen of the flowers attract butterflies & bees.

Pruning. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering since it sets flower buds in the summer for next year blooms.

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil:Highly adaptable to a wide range of soils. Adaptable to acidic soil, clay soil, and some standing water.
Light: Full sun to part shade. Best stem color is produced in more sun
Water: Will do fine if the soil is occasionally wet.  Do not over water, just try to maintain a regular water schedule by supplementing rainfall.
Spacing: 24-36" apart
Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced general, or slow release fertilizer very early in spring before any growth begins.  Somewhat heavy fertilization will help maintain foliage color, but don't overdo it.  Just be sure to fertilize each and every spring, being somewhat more generous than you would for other low maintenance shrub.
Winterizing: No special care going into winter.
Maintenance & Pruning:  Flowers are produced on old wood, hence any pruning needs to be done immediately after flowering since it sets flower buds in the summer for next years bloom.
