Lavender 'Hidcote' Description

Best seller!  What's there not to love about lavender: sweetly scented leaves and flowers, beautiful color, long blooming, attracts pollinators, and resists deer and rabbits. 'Hidcote' is an especially note-worthy selection for its ability to withstand cold Northern winters and still provide everything you love about lavender.

Lavender is a mound forming sub-shrub or woody herb. Stems are covered in silvery-grey foliage that is fragrant all year round. In summer, fragrant purple flower spikes emerge, and they can be harvested and dried for foods, beverages, and crafts. Grows 15" x 24".

How to grow

'Hidcote' English lavender is heat, drought, and wind tolerant.  Well-drained soils are imperative: never plant lavender in areas that are wet, even for short periods. Site with at least six hours of bright sun each day for best flowers, fragrance, and form.

In spring, when new growth begins to emerge on the stems, cut or trim them back by about a 1/3. Prune them like a shrub, so don't cut back completely.  Remove any dead wood at this time.

Drying lavender

Cut flower spikes before they fully open. Bundle stems in small bunches of about one inch diameter. Hang them upside down in a dry, dark area with good air circulation.  Once dried, store in an airtight containers.

Garden design with lavender

Lavender is a staple in the herb garden, but also provides fragrance, foliage and flower interest in the perennial garden.  They are quite stunning in large groupings lining a walkway or path.  Lavender combines well with all sun-loving perennials, and we especially like it with other blue plants, like nepeta and 'Rozanne' geranium.  Lavender and roses are, of course, a classic combination that's hard to beat.

Special features: Cold hardy, Cut flower, Cut foliage, Dried flower, Drought tolerant, Easy care,  Fast growing, Fragrance, Heat tolerant, Long blooming, Multi-season interest, Winter interest

Soil: Any well-drained soil will do. Lavender cannot tolerate wet soils for any length of time.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day)
Water: Dry to average. Very tolerant of dry conditions once established.
Spacing: 18 - 24 inches
Fertilizing: Lavender need little in the way of fertilizer. However, if your plants were severely set back by winter damage, you may wish to apply some granular garden fertilizer in early spring to give it a boost in its recovery.
Winterizing: Plants may get some damage in winter, which can be exacerbated by wet soil conditions.
Maintenance & pruning: Remove faded flowers to promote continued bloom. Prune once or twice a year to keep plant shapely. Prune option #1: in the spring after the lavender wakes up. Wait until the lavender has signs of new growth (do not worry if it takes a while to wake up).

I ordered 6 of the hidcote. Delivery was prompt and packaging was above expectations. However the product was not up to standards. Out of the 6 one looks like it will make it. Directions for care and planting very specific and helpful. Still hoping for a miracle for the other 5!
Owner Response: Hope the replacements that we sent are doing well.

Surprized in size.

My order just arrived yesterday, and I just had to write and thank you. No only was the delivery prompt and very well packed, but the vivaciousness of the plants themselvers made opening each mox a pleasant surprise. Everything was fresh enough to practically walk out of the box on their own, and the soil and root balls were still quite moist, which seems to have all but eliminated any shipping trauma. I'm already looking forward to my next order...as soon as my spouse lets me have the credit card back. :))
