Calycanthus Aphrodite Description
This easy to grow Sweetshrub hybrid is a long-blooming Flowering Shrub with giant 4" red flowers and a strong strawberry fragrance!
Vigorous grower and ultra hardy, this NEW and highly fragrant shrub is also a heavy rebloomer and continues her flower show from mid-summer into early fall.
Large, forest green leaves have a shiny, waxy appearance and grow to 5" long by 5" wide and give a tropical appearance to the shrub border.
Plant in full sun to part shade. Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil. Tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, but prefers a rich loam.
Sweetshrub is a low maintenance shrub that is not bothered by any serious insect or disease problems. Pruning is not necessary but may be cut back after flowering to maintain desired height and shape. Enjoy this delicious fragrance when you plant near a walkway or patio area.

Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers moist, sandy soils, but has surprisingly good drought tolerance. Drought tolerant in the North; even moisture is required in the South
Light: Tolerates filtered sunlight, but prefers full sun.
Water: Medium -- well drained soil. Can adapt to dry or moist conditions but cannot tolerate standing water.
Spacing: 36-48 inches
Fertilizing: Fertilize at planting time or in early spring with a slow-release product such as Osmocote, Nutricote, or Nursery Special
Winterizing: Appreciates a winter mulch in the northern parts of its growing range.
Maintenance & Pruning: Deadhead individual spent flowers and remove spent flowering stems to encourage additional bloom. Once flowering is finished, shrub may be cut back after flowering to maintain desired height & shape.
