Hydrangea 'Annabelle' Description
AVAILABLE MID APRIL 2020!
Even gardeners in very cold climates can be successful with this old favorite 'Annabelle' hydrangea.
Although many of the blue or pink types of hydrangeas fail to bloom in the colder regions, you can count on durable smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens) like 'Annabelle' to bloom every year..
'Annabelle' hydrangea was discovered in Anna, Illinois, in the 1960s and has been a garden favorite ever since. Though it usually flops over during summer storms, you can minimize it by growing it with at least half a days' sun and not pruning it all the way back to the ground. Once it has flopped, you can always cut the flowers to enjoy in a vase or try dry. Note: Newer hydrangeas like the Invincibelle® and Incrediball® series offer significant improvements over 'Annabelle', like strong stems that don't flop, colorful blooms, and reblooming ability, so if you dislike the fact that 'Annabelle' flops over every summer, try one of the improved varieties instead.
Special features: Cut flower, Dried flower, Easy care, Fast growing, Heat tolerant, Long blooming, Multi-season interest

Soil: Average, well-drained soil is best. Shallow rooted hydrangeas benefit from 2-3" of mulch.
Light: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. In the South, plants require afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. Intolerant of drought, with foliage tending to decline considerably in dry conditions
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet. Spacing: 4 - 6 feet
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with a granular rose fertilizer.
Winterizing: No special care required. Mulch is beneficial.
Maintenance & pruning: Blooms on new wood, so can be pruned in the fall, winter, or spring. We recommend cutting back by just one-third the total height each year; do not cut back to the ground.
ReviewsWrite a reviewNice Plants!Cheryl W. | Jul 23, 2018The hydrangeas were so nice. Thank you for answering my questions and sending me suggestions. I have ordered from you before and I always have been pleased! Thanks!
Wonderful plants.Kristen DeP | Jun 30, 2015I just wanted to thank you for the amazing and beautiful, excellent quality plants I received from you. The front of my home faces northand I can never find beautiful shade plants in my local nurseries. The only mildly interesting plants I could ever find were Hostas. That is,until I find your website! I was so shocked that so many beautiful plants and flowers were available for shade! I've ordered plants online before and have always been disappointed. Ieither receive bare root plants that are dead by the time I receive them, or they're packaged so badly they arrive crushed and mangled, or they're so tiny they rarely take and when they do it takes forever to grow into something you can see. I was so shocked and surprised how beautiful the plants were that you shipped me! They were packaged really well, they were established, they were moist and in awesome condition! Thank you so much for providing such quality plants! You have earned yourself a customer for life! Keep up the great work and know that your efforts are appreciated. I feel it's important to let companies know when they're doing a great job and you guys are doing a STELLAR job. (And I've told ALL my friends and neighbors about your site!)
Lovely Hydrangeas!Adrienne V | Jun 29, 2014I ordered from you for the first time, and I needed to send you this email to tell you how pleased I am with my purchase of 14 hydrangeas. I have never been so impressed with mail order nursery stock-- your packaging was EXCELLENT. The plants are LARGE and HEALTHY, and arrived in perfect condition despite being shipped during end-of-June heat. The careful packaging just floored me!!!! I can;t wait too spread the word to my plant-loving friends about your business, and I canl' wait to order again! THANK YOU!!!!
