Hydrangea Pistachio™ Description

AVAILABLE SPRING 2020!

The color will make you say wow! Pistachio (H. macrophylla) is a classic, beloved big-leaf hydrangea, the kind that typically has big pink or blue puffy flowers. Pistachio hydrangea is anything but typical, though, with flowers that are bright red or purple and streaked with vivid green. The effect is simply stunning - you must see it yourself, and you can, since it's actually really easy to grow.

Our robust jumbo half-gallon pot gets you off to the best possible start at the best possible price.

Compact 3' tall and 3' wide size means no pruning required!

Pistachio hydrangea begins to bloom in early summer with big 8" flowers, which continue to appear well into fall. You'll love them in the garden or in a vase!

Pruning couldn't be simpler - there's no need to prune it! Just cut out any dead wood in early spring, when the new growth begins.

Pistachio is a unique choice for a long-blooming hydrangea hedge for driveways or fence lines. Showy enough to be planted on its own, it also combines to beautiful effect with boxwood, roses, and evergreens.

Hydrangeas have taken the garden world by storm. They are widely adaptable to both clay and sandy soil provided they are given copious amounts of water during the prolonged summer dry spells.

Special features: Cut flower, Dried flower, Easy care, Fast growing, Heat tolerant, Long blooming, Multi-season interest

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Average/moderate moisture, well-drained soils. Mulch helps conserve moisture and minimize wilting during hot weather.
Generally, a soil pH below 5.0 results in purple to blue tones, and as the pH rises the flowers develop more pink to red tones. The pH determines the availability of aluminum in the soil; this element is more readily available in acid soils, and this availability results in the blue flower color. Since phosphorus ties up aluminum in soils, using a fertilizer low in this nutrient will aid in attaining blue flowers. If pink flowers are desired and your soil is acid, simply add lime to raise the pH and use a balanced fertilizer. Aluminum sulfate will lower pH if blue flowers are desired.
Light: Most big leaf hydrangeas tolerate full sun in the north, but benefit from afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. In the south, plants require afternoon shade. Intolerant of drought, with foliage declining considerably in dry conditions
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet.
Spacing: 3-5'
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with a fertilizer designed to encourage blooms (such as a rose fertilizer).
Winterizing: Apply 2-3" of shredded bark mulch over the roots for winter. You may wish to protect this hydrangea in zone 5 by covering it with dry leaves.
Maintenance & pruning: This variety blooms on both old and new wood. However, it is best to avoid pruning altogether, as particularly in cold climates, it's impossible to prune without compromising the blooming ability at least somewhat. You may remove dead wood in early spring, when the new growth begins to emerge, as this shows you what portions are alive and which aren't. As plant matures, remove up to one-third of the oldest stems at ground level.

I was a little late to the party this spring when I decided to plant pistachio hydrangeas and had a hard time finding them. Every place was out of stock. When I found them here, I ordered 4 of them. They arrived in great shape and have grown very well. One little one even had 2 blooms. Highly recommend Great Garden Plants. Very happy with their product and service.

Wonderful plants.

I just wanted to thank you for the amazing and beautiful, excellent quality plants I received from you. The front of my home faces northand I can never find beautiful shade plants in my local nurseries. The only mildly interesting plants I could ever find were Hostas. That is,until I find your website! I was so shocked that so many beautiful plants and flowers were available for shade! I've ordered plants online before and have always been disappointed. Ieither receive bare root plants that are dead by the time I receive them, or they're packaged so badly they arrive crushed and mangled, or they're so tiny they rarely take and when they do it takes forever to grow into something you can see. I was so shocked and surprised how beautiful the plants were that you shipped me! They were packaged really well, they were established, they were moist and in awesome condition! Thank you so much for providing such quality plants! You have earned yourself a customer for life! Keep up the great work and know that your efforts are appreciated. I feel it's important to let companies know when they're doing a great job and you guys are doing a STELLAR job. (And I've told ALL my friends and neighbors about your site!)

Lovely Hydrangeas!

I ordered from you for the first time, and I needed to send you this email to tell you how pleased I am with my purchase of 14 hydrangeas. I have never been so impressed with mail order nursery stock-- your packaging was EXCELLENT. The plants are LARGE and HEALTHY, and arrived in perfect condition despite being shipped during end-of-June heat. The careful packaging just floored me!!!! I can;t wait too spread the word to my plant-loving friends about your business, and I canl' wait to order again! THANK YOU!!!!
