Hosta 'Mini Skirt' Description

A small pocket size plant for shade only 5" tall!

'Mini Skirt' hosta is an ideal plant for small spaces or container gardening, thanks to its useful dwarf size and colorful, ruffled leaves.

This drought tolerant groundcover is perfectly mounded and tailored looking, in time the mound will grow 12" wide. Thick textured, slug-proof blue-green leaves have a creamy yellow margin that twist and twirl with an attitude.  Although it looks fragile, it has a tough disposition holding up under heat, humidity and severe weather and keeps it good looks throughout the season.

In summer, plumpy purple scapes add an eye-catching touch in mid-summer.

Terrific for miniature gardens, fairy gardens, urban gardens or anywhere you want a nice glow of color. Use it as an edging with other small Hostas such as 'Blue Mouse Ears' or 'Sun Mouse'.

Hostas grow best in rich, moisture retentive soil, but can tolerate a range of soil conditions. Morning sun is preferable to afternoon sun.  More shade will keep it's blue coloration

Special features: Cold hardy, Cut flower, Cut foliage, Drought tolerant, Easy care, Foliage interest, Heat tolerant, Moisture tolerant, Rabbit resistant

Soil: Evenly moist, organically rich, slightly acid, well-drained soils.
Light: Part shade to full shade -- Best in part shade (some morning sun, or sun dappled conditions).
Water: Medium -- Established plants have some tolerance for dry shade (particularly plants with thick leaves), but soils should never be allowed to dry out. Water is best applied directly to the soil beneath the leaves.
Spacing: 0.75 to 1.00 feet
Fertilizing: Light application of time release fertilizer, or side-dress with compost and organic amendments when new growth appears in early spring.
Winterizing: Foliage should be cut back to the ground in the fall. Provide a winter mulch of evergreen boughs, 2" of leaves, or salt marsh hay after the ground freezes to help prevent heaving, and protect the shallow crowns.
Maintenance & pruning: offers slug-proof varieties.  However, there may be regions of the country where the environment is conducive to slugs.  Slugs are the bane of Hostas; use slug bait, dishes of beer, and diatomaceous earth to discourage them. Groom plants by removing yellow or dead leaves and cut flower spikes back as they finish blooming in summer.
