Hydrangea Fire Light® Description

Seeing is believing, and it only takes one look to fall in love with this big-blooming, reliable hardy hydrangea!

Fire Light® hardy hydrangea was selected by the expert horticulturists at Proven Winners. They loved its giant 10" blooms that change from white to red, its rock-solid reliability, its vigorous growth, and so do we!

Fire Light is an easy-care panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata). Also known as a peegee or limelight hydrangea, you'll never have to wonder whether or not it will bloom: it just does, even in cold areas. Even in hot areas. Even if you prune it. You'll enjoy big, beautiful blooms, year after year after year.

The big, cone-shaped blooms start out creamy white and as summer progresses, they take on pink then deep red tones. That color lasts all the way through frost, ensuring months of floral interest. Like other panicle hydrangeas, Fire Light makes an excellent cut flowers, and stems last over 12 days after cutting.

Must-have Fire Light® hydrangea grows to 6-8' tall and boasts dozens of giant 10" flowers held atop strong, erect, flower stems. No worries about this robust beauty flopping and leaving its blooms on the ground where no one can enjoy them.

Fire Light® hydrangea is extremely versatile in the landscape. It makes a superb specimen, long-blooming hedge plant, or addition to the perennial garden. You'll love it on its own, in multiples, or combined with any other plant. Plus, it's the 2019 Hydrangea of the Year!

Special features: Cut flower, Dried flower, Easy care, Fast growing, Heat tolerant, Long blooming, Multi-season interest

Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. A 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is highly recommended.
Light: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. In the South, plants require afternoon shade.
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet. Panicle hydrangeas suffer dramatically in poorly drained or wet areas.
Spacing: 6-8 ft.
Fertilizing: Little required. Apply a granular rose fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Winterizing: Panicle hydrangeas are very cold tolerant and need little more than a nice layer of mulch to conserve moisture and prevent cold damage to the roots.
Maintenance & pruning: Blooms on new wood, which means that the plant creates its flower buds only once it has started leafing out in spring. This means it can be pruned in spring and still flower. We recommend cutting back by one-third its total height in late winter/early spring, which ensures growth for the year comes from thick, vigorous buds while also building up a strong woody base.
