Pennisetum 'Hameln' Description

Deer proof pennisetum is happy in heat & drought!   Your on your way to an easy-care garden!

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' - Compact fountain grass. If you are bored with predictable foundation plantings, consider adding Hameln grass to your front yard.  These easy care and dependable ornamental grasses provide season long interest, color, height and texture.  Consider using in the front yard which needs to look great all season long or add to the rose garden.  The juxtaposition of a fine-textured plants such as pennistum with the bold, velvety blooms of roses is attractive.  They also serve a purpose in hiding "bare ankles" of roses. Highly adaptable, they can take wet feet and grow well in a rain garden, or near gutters.

Compact form that can turn a stretch of paving into a welcoming walkway. Foliage helps to soften the abrupt transition from paving to planting.  Tough enough to withstand occasional trampling.

Dense mounds of arching narrow green glossy leaves turn golden to orange-yellow in fall then tan for winter; fluffy, upright to arching spikelike clusters of greenish cream or pinkish bottle-brush type flowers bloom atop 3 foot tall stems in early to mid summer, turning tan and lasting into fall. Flowers are good cut and dried. Loved by birds. Grows 18-24 feet tall and wide.

How to grow pennisetum

Highly adaptable, they thrive from dry to wet soil. Resistant to heat and drought good for banks/slopes when left unplanted can erode over time. Pennisetum help control erosion without the regularly maintenance such as deadheading.  If planting near a walkway, don't place them right near the edge, set them back so they'll just cover the path's edge when fully grown.

Designing with pennisteum

Use in front yard, beds and border, rose companions, pathways and walkways, pots and plants, accent plants. Combine with ground covers. use on slopes.  In a perennial border, repeat plantings of Hameln. Get the  American Garden look when planted in groupings with other mass plantings of gaura, echinacea, rudbeckia.  Our favorite combination you'll see in one of the pictures if with upright sedum Autumn Joy.

Soil: Easily grown in average, medium to wet soil
Light: Full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. Tolerates part shade, but may not flower in too much shade.
Water: Medium -- Once established, will adapt to poorer soils with occasional drought. Occasional deep watering is needed during periods of drought in summer to keep the foliage from rolling and twisting, and it is common to see the tips of the foliage turn brown during these times.
Spacing: 18 - 24 inches
Fertilizing: Small amounts of fertilizer are needed for ornamental grasses. Too much fertilizer will increase the nitrogen level and that can lead to lodging or flopping over. The best time for applying fertilizer is in the spring, just as growth is resuming. About one -quarter cup, per item, of a 10-10-10 slow release fertilizer is enough to take care of the plant needs throughout the entire summer. For best results, make sure you thoroughly water in the fertilizer.
Winterizing: Can leave foliage standing for winter. Shear the dead portions back to 3-4 inches above the ground by late Mar. to allow the new growth to emerge unhindered.
Maintenance & pruning: About every 3-4 years, propagate by division of the clump into several pieces in early spring (after shearing the dead foliage away) and discard the center of the clump (and any other peripheral portions which have died).
