Bergenia Winterglut Description
Huge leathery evergreen foliage make an outstanding drought proof shade perennial groundcover. Green leaves take on a reddish hue during the fall/winter; weathering winter well and providing 12 months of interest. Foliage turns back green in spring. Pinkish-red blooms arise to 6-8" spikes ushering in spring color. Both flowers and foliage can be cut to provide exotic indoor arrangements. Tough and durable thriving in average to dry soils Just remove any winter weary leaves in spring. Great as an edging or front of the border.

Soil: Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Tolerant of a wide range, but prefers moist, humus soils.
Light: Part shade to full shade
Water: Medium -- Prefers evenly moist, not soggy.
Spacing: 12-18 in.
Fertilizing: Fertilizer needs are low. If you have poor soil, feed during spring growing season with a light application of slow release fertilizer such as "Osmocote"
Winterizing: No specific care needed. Evergreen in the South but may suffer considerable winter damage in colder climates such as St. Louis.
Maintenance & Pruning: Remove all damaged foliage in late winter to early spring. Prompt remove spent flowering stems. If needed, divide in spring every 3-4 years. Easily grown from seed. Spreads slowly by rhizomes.
