Isotoma fluviatilis - jumbo landscape plugs Description

Our jumbo landscape plugs of isotoma are the perfect way to cover a lot of ground, quickly and economically!

Few other ground covers are as easy or long-blooming as blue star creeper (Isotoma fluviatilis). It's a nice alternative for difficult sites where traditional turf grass fails.

Small oval green leaves form tight 3" tall mats.  Fast spreading flowering carpets of  hundreds of tiny blue flowers. Can grow up to 18" wide in a single year. Sweet, star-like, ice-blue blooms from late spring into summer.

About blue star creeper

Isotoma is a deciduous (=goes dormant in winter) groundcover that tolerates heavy foot traffic.   Full sun to part shade will provide best growth and flowering.   In heavier shade, plants may not bloom as much, but  still grow quickly

Grows vigorously.   This creeping perennial roots quickly and creeps robustly often growing 18" or wider in the first season.  It will tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay, but grows more vigorously in well drained soil with a consistent supply of moisture.

Heavy foot traffic areas.  From light to heavy, blue star creeper stand in beautifully in tough landscapes spaces.

Caution!  Be careful when planting isotoma near turf, as it can spread and intermix with lawn grasses. Maintain a distance of 12" throughout the year between plants and turf. Isotoma typically won't spread into dry soils.

How to use

Ideal as a large scale lawn alternative.  Charming as a filler plant stepping stones and boulders.  Some gardeners plant it within their perennial bed, which looks pretty and also helps keep weeds down. We recommend getting rid of weeds before planting in large areas.

Special features: Deer resistant, Heat tolerant, Pest resistant, Rabbit resistant

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Will grow in sandy, silty, loamy soil. Prefers a moist, well drained soil. Suffers in compacted and wet soils, so amend compacted or clay soils appropriately before planting.
Light: Full sun to part shade. Benefits from some afternoon shade in warmer growing zones.
Water: Water regularly until established. Although the plant is very drought tolerant, it benefits from a bit of extra moisture in full sunlight or during hot, dry weather.
Spacing: 12 - 18 inches
Fertilizing: An application of any general-purpose garden fertilizer before new growth emerges in spring will keep the plant well-nourished throughout the growing season.
Winterizing: No special care needed
Maintenance & pruning: Shearing the plant down to about an inch in autumn helps keep the plant tidy during the winter months.
