Heuchera Delta Dawn Description

Easy care Heuchera Delta Dawn makes a take-notice statement in any shade perennial garden.

Delta Dawn Coral Bells is an interesting twist on a perennial classic. A sturdy mound of HUGE rounded gold-lime leaves have a bold reddish center during the cooler times of the year.  By summer, the color transitions to a pleasing chartreuse.

Delta Dawn is a villosa type, meaning it does a terrific job standing up to the rigors of wind, heat & humidity, especially in southern gardens. It's strong vigorous habit and good garden performance makes Delta Dawn a home run favorite for any shade garden.

This drought tolerant shade groundcover forms a HUGE clump 12" tall and a whopping 30" wide.  Tiny white flowers showcase in early summer and flower for an incredible 22 weeks of the year that appeal to butterflies & hummingbirds.

Foliage is one of the secrets to long lasting color in the shade garden.  Heucheras provide up to 3 seasons of interest and withstand the rigors of heat & humidity in the summer garden.  This shade loving groundcovers needs little maintenance or work on your part and will live for many years as long as you provide good drainage.

Heucheras are a low maintenance groundcover that thrives in moist, well-drained soil.  They can take up to 1-3 hours of morning sun, but prefer shade in the afternoon.

Stunning in combination planters, mixed beds, or planted in masses along shaded walkways.  Combine Coral Bells with Hellebore, bold leaf Hostas, or as an under planting to Hydrangeas.

Ideas and How-to's

Soil: Coral bells like a neutral to slightly acid soil pH, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas. They do well in soil where some organic matter has been added.
Light: As a general rule, Heucheras do well in shade, but for the highly colored varieties, some morning sun will bring out more intense coloring. The color can wash out in full sun, and too much heat and light can cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Average -- better too dry than too wet when established. Keep the soil evenly moist but not consistently wet to prevent root rot. To reduce the risk of foliar disease, Heuchera require watering during the early morning so any excess moisture can evaporate before evening. Drip irrigation effectively delivers moisture directly to the soil, further reducing the plant's vulnerability to disease.
Spacing: 1.5 ft
Fertilizing: Use good quality compost or well aged livestock manure or a combination of the two. Apply a few pounds for each plant, each year or two. On poor soils, top dress every year or every other year on moderate quality soils. Spreading a 2-inch layer of mulch over the soil surrounding Heuchera helps insulate the soil during winter and improve moisture retention. About 3 inches of space between the plant's crown and the mulch allows air circulation, which prevents rotting and disease. Replenishing the mulch throughout the year ensures proper winter protection and hinders the establishment of competitive weeds.  Heuchera does not require fertilization during the fall or winter months.
Winterizing: Winter mulching will prevent the freezing and thawing that can heave plants roots.
Maintenance & Pruning: Cut back the entire flower stalk after flowering, to put the plants energy into growing more leaves.  Divide Coral bells every 3-5 years, to keep them from dying out in the center.
