Heuchera Blackberry Ice Description
Heuchera Blackberry Ice is an attention getting shade groundcover that combines foliage, texture, color and good looks all in one shade plant.
Deliciously saturated purple Heuchera foliage is softened with generous amounts of silver and accented with deep black veins. Like a frosty ice on a summer day, this mid-tone purple coral bells is refreshing and fun lending charm to any shade garden space.
Blackberry Ice makes for a beautiful clumping mound that stays neat and tidy throughout the growing season.
Heucheras make an excellent foliage plant for shade to part shade gardens. Blackberry Ice foliage color becomes more radiant with a few hours of sun during the day.
Blackberry Ice has been bred to stand up to the rigors of wind, rain, heat & humidity and is one of the most colorful drought tolerant shade groundcovers to be introduced in recent years.
This coral bells grows to 12" tall and 18" wide. Ideal for planting in the front of the shade garden border or mixed in with other perennials. In midsummer, purple-red 20" scapes give way to wands of white flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds & butterflies.
Foliage color is one of the secrets to long lasting color in the shade garden.
Heucheras are a low maintenance groundcover that thrives in moist, well-drained soil and good drainage. They can take full sun in cool climates, part shade in warm ones. Stunning in combination planters, mixed beds or whenever you need a jolt of color.
Other combination ideas include Hellebores bold-leafed Hostas, or Hydrangea

Soil: Coral bells like a neutral to slightly acid soil pH, somewhere between 6.0 and 7.0. Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas. They do well in soil where some organic matter has been added.
Light: As a general rule, Heucheras do well in shade, but for the highly colored varieties, some morning sun will bring out more intense coloring. The color can wash out in full sun, and too much heat and light can cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Average -- better too dry than too wet when established. Keep the soil evenly moist but not consistently wet to prevent root rot. To reduce the risk of foliage disease, Heuchera require watering during the early morning so any excess moisture can evaporate before evening. Drip irrigation effectively delivers moisture directly to the soil, further reducing the plant's vulnerability to disease.
Spacing: 1.5 ft
Fertilizing: Use good quality compost or well aged livestock manure, or a combination of the two. Apply a few pounds for each plant, each year or two. On poor soils, top dress every year, or every other year on moderate quality soils. Spreading a 2-inch layer of mulch over the soil surrounding Heuchera helps insulate the soil during winter and improve moisture retention. About 3 inches of space between the plant's crown and the mulch allows air circulation, which prevents rotting and disease. Replenishing the mulch throughout the year ensures proper winter protection, and hinders the establishment of competitive weeds. Heuchera does not require fertilization during the fall or winter months.
Winterizing: Winter mulching will prevent the freezing and thawing that can heave plants roots.
Maintenance & Pruning: Cut back the entire flower stalk after flowering to put the plants energy into growing more leaves. Divide Coral bells every 3-5 years to keep them from dying out in the center.
ReviewsWrite a reviewLOVEmichelle | Jul 8, 2018I can't remember the exact coral bell that I ordered years ago, but It is my favorite in my garden! year after year it comes back with little help from me. I have had more success with these plants than any other place. I have bought several coral bells from the local nursery, and if they even survive, they cant even compete with the one I got from this website. The others don"t seem to grow.
Wonderful plants.Kristen DeP | Jun 30, 2015I just wanted to thank you for the amazing and beautiful, excellent quality plants I received from you. The front of my home faces northand I can never find beautiful shade plants in my local nurseries. The only mildly interesting plants I could ever find were Hostas. That is,until I find your website! I was so shocked that so many beautiful plants and flowers were available for shade! I've ordered plants online before and have always been disappointed. Ieither receive bare root plants that are dead by the time I receive them, or they're packaged so badly they arrive crushed and mangled, or they're so tiny they rarely take and when they do it takes forever to grow into something you can see. I was so shocked and surprised how beautiful the plants were that you shipped me! They were packaged really well, they were established, they were moist and in awesome condition! Thank you so much for providing such quality plants! You have earned yourself a customer for life! Keep up the great work and know that your efforts are appreciated. I feel it's important to let companies know when they're doing a great job and you guys are doing a STELLAR job. (And I've told ALL my friends and neighbors about your site!)
