Hosta Shadowland® 'Empress Wu' Description

Shadowlands 'Empress Wu' is truly the largest hosta we've EVER seen!  This amazing hosta from Proven Winners will form a massive upright clump measuring 3-4 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide when mature.

Huge, thick textured blue-green leaves measure over 18" across. Soft violet flowers in midsummer. Leathery leaves make this hosta more resistant to slug damage than others.

Given time and plenty of moisture, this hosta will truly reach epic proportions, creating a practically prehistoric display you'll look forward to every year. Imagine the photo opportunities!

This hosta makes a striking statement in your shade garden.  It keeps down weeds, makes its own shade, and looks fabulous while doing it.

Although hostas will grow in a wide range of soil, they will perform their best in a soil that has abundant organic matter - compost, rotted manure, mulch, and the like.

Shadowlands 'Empress Wu' hosta stands on its own to create an experience of magic and mystery, but it also combines beautifully with other hostas, Japanese anemones, and bold ferns. A single leaf will make a unique contemporary flower arrangement; you can also use them to cast your own fountain, birdbath, or garden stepping stones!

Special features: Cold hardy, Cut flower, Cut foliage,Drought tolerant, Easy care, Foliage interest, Heat tolerant, Moisture tolerant, Rabbit resistant

Soil: Evenly moist, organically rich, slightly acid, well-drained soils.
Light: Part shade to full shade -- Best in part shade (some morning sun or sun dappled conditions).
Water: Medium -- Established plants have some tolerance for dry shade (particularly plants with thick leaves), but soils should never be allowed to dry out. Water is best applied directly to the soil beneath the leaves.
Spacing: 4-5 feet
Fertilizing: Light application of time release fertilizer, or side-dress with compost and organic amendments when new growth appears in early spring.
Winterizing: Foliage should be cut back to the ground in the fall. Provide a winter mulch of evergreen boughs, 2" of leaves or salt marsh hay after the ground freezes to help prevent heaving, and protect the shallow crowns.
Maintenance & pruning: offers slug-proof varieties.  However, there may be regions of the country where the environment is conducive to slugs.  Slugs are the bane of hostas; use slug bait, dishes of beer, and diatomaceous earth to discourage them. Groom plants by removing yellow or dead leaves and cut flower spikes back as they finish blooming in summer.

I received my order on schedule and was super pleased! I have ordered plants online before, including hostas and have always been somewhat disappointed. Paying top dollar and getting just a piece of a root or a tiny twig popping out of soil is frustrating. I ordered two hostas, one for me and one for my daughters yard. I warned her that we might just get a plastic bag with a couple of roots in it. Instead you sent me a beautiful, nice big plant with lots of fully developed leaves. I am so happy. You can be sure I'll be ordering more and recommending you to all my garden loving friends.

Highest praises to all at GGP. Order arrived on time, and all 12 hosta's were perfect, healthy, and with no issues at all, not even one cracked or brown tipped leaf. Thank you!!
