Hosta 'Stained Glass' Description

Hosta Stained Glass is so appropriately named for its light reflecting, brilliant gold-yellow centers, artistically trimmed in green.

This medium sized hosta is perfect for those transition areas of sun to shade in the garden since it thrives in both locations! The shiny luster on the leaves is where the sun is doing its work, and making this beauty glow!  In fact, the more sun it receives the brighter it becomes!

If you are looking for a classy shade perennial requiring little maintenance yet becoming more beautiful every year - this is it!

Grows 15 inches high and 36 inches across. Large and attractive fragrant, light lavender flowers in August.

Hostas grow best in rich, moisture retentive soil, but can tolerate a range of soil conditions. Stained Glass hosta looks stellar growing in morning sun and afternoon shade. The color stays true even during summer heat. The symmetrical leaves have a puffy texture that become more pronounced over the years. Requires a medium size area in the perennial shade garden.

Special features: Cold hardy, Cut flower, Cut foliage, Drought tolerant, Easy care, Foliage interest, Heat tolerant, Moisture tolerant, Rabbit resistant, Variegated

Soil: Evenly moist, organically rich, slightly acid, well-drained soils.
Light: Part shade to full shade -- Best in part shade (some morning sun or sun dappled conditions).
Water: Medium -- Established plants have some tolerance for dry shade (particularly plants with thick leaves), but soils should never be allowed to dry out. Water is best applied directly to the soil beneath the leaves.
Spacing: 2 - 2.5 feet
Fertilizing: Light application of time release fertilizer, or side-dress with compost and organic amendments when new growth appears in early spring.
Winterizing : Foliage should be cut back to the ground in the fall. Provide a winter mulch of evergreen boughs, 2" of leaves or salt marsh hay after the ground freezes to help prevent heaving, and protect the shallow crowns.
Maintenance & pruning: offers slug-proof varieties.  However, there may be regions of the country where the environment is conducive to slugs.  Slugs are the bane of hostas; use slug bait, dishes of beer, and diatomaceous earth to discourage them. Groom plants by removing yellow or dead leaves, and cut flower spikes back as they finish blooming in summer.
