Artemisia 'Silver Mound' Description

Silver Mound Artemisia is a compact mounding drought proof ground cover and one of the most popular perennial foliage plants for sunny areas as it happily embraces heat, humidity and long dry spells.

Like most other artemisias, the primary appeal is not the flowers, but rather the silvery, grey foliage which forms a delicate looking hemispherical mound.

This sun perennial has glistening silver foliage and delicate texture that works well with any color or on its own as a focal point in the garden. Silver Mound is a good separator plant.  When you have 2 colors that clash with each other, planting a neutral silver foliage plant in between helps resolve that problem.  Silver Mound is ideal for dry parts of the garden where there is litte overhead watering (it actually does better with less water).  Try a few in containers, where their soft foliage provides an ideal accent to other types of textured plants.

Artemisa Silver Mound combines well with taller plants that have "ugly" knees such as coneflowers or daylilies, shrubs and more.

How To Grow

Silver Mound will thrive in poor to average soil in a well-drained location.  They perform best with low fertility and little water.  Delicate foliage sprays open in summer and when that happens, just give it a quick clipping or shearing back by a 1/3.  Plants will quickly rebound with a fresh foliage look thru fall.

Features:  Cold hardy, Deer resistant, Disease resistant, Drought tolerant, Easy care, Fast growing, Foliage interest, Fragrance, Heat tolerant, Pest resistant, Rabbit resistant, Season extender

Soil: Moist/Well Drained/Humus. Is salt tolerant.
Light: Full sun or partial shade
Water: Needs regular watering - weekly, or more often in extreme heat. Do not let dry out between watering. Spacing: plant 2- 3 feet apart. Some protection from winds is advised.
Fertilizing: Needs little, though a light scattering of slow release fertilizer such as Osmocote, can be beneficial in spring as plants emerge.
Winterizing: Can add a covering of winter mulch (leaves) in colder areas. Remove in spring before plants emerge.
Maintenance & pruning: Spreads by stolons and can be aggressive. Divide every few years in spring, by digging and moving emerging plant clumps.
