Schizophragma Rose Sensation™ Description
Handsome leaves makes this an attractive climbing vine for shade-part shade
Rose Sensation brings a unique look to climbing vines with its pink and white hued bracts, (bracts resemble flowers, but are sterile) dark green foliage and pink blooms. A woody stemmed climbing vine boasts large dark green leaves with jagged edges (3-5 inches across) and showy Hydrangea like lace-cap white clusters that measure 8-10" across that bloom in early summer. Flowers are fertile and visited by bees. In fall, foliage turns yellow. Bark is a reddish brown. Not bothered by insects or disease problems. Grows up to 40-50 feet tall.
Although commonly called Japanese hydrangea, it is not a member of the hydrangea family.
How to grow
- Slow to get started - but grows fast once it begins.
- Climbs by way of adhesive rootlets which attaches itself to walls and other surfaces. (Need a strong support structure)
- Grows in part shade-shade and sun, but does best in partial shade.
- Can be pruned to any desired height - best to prune after flowering to keep desired height.
- Thrives in moist, well drained soil. Mulch soil to keep moist.
- Feed in late winter or early spring before new foliage appears.
Designing with climbing hydrangea
- Beautiful growing up a brick wall. Requires a solid support structure as they can get large and heavy. Consider growing up a large tree if no other support structure is available. Plant about 2-3 feet away from a tree trunk or well which will help the vine thicken up.
- You can also plant climbing hydrangea as a groundcover - so select a place where it can ramble sufficiently as it can trail up to 50 feet. Prune as desired to keep within bounds, but do so after blooming

PLANTING GUIDE
Soil: Average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Mulch plants after soil has warmed to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures.
Light: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown with consistent moisture. In the South, plants require afternoon shade. Overall, performs best in part shade with moisture retentive soil. Intolerant of drought, with foliage tending to decline considerably in dry conditions
Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet.
Spacing: 5 - 10 ft.
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with a fertilizer designed to encourage blooms (such as 15-30-15).
Winterizing: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage.
Maintenance & pruning: This variety blooms on old wood. If it is growing too large, prune to the desired size after flowering.. Later pruning will damage developing flower buds. In spring, only prune out dead wood once the new growth has emerged. Young plants may be transplanted when dormant in early spring.Reviews
