Microbiota decussata Description

Here's an outstanding low spreading hardy evergreen ground cover that resembles juniper with an easy carefree habit for sun or shade.

Microbiota or Siberian Cypress has graceful, lacy shaped leaves that turn copper in winter and reverts to green again in spring. Exceptionally hardy, surviving temperatures of -40 F or below.

A single plant will gradually grow to form a colorful, evergreen carpet 18" tall and up to 7' wide after 5-7 years.  Highly drought tolerant and easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of soil conditions including prolonged periods of drought.

Microbiota makes a perfect under-planting to Ornamental Grasses, long-blooming Knock Out Roses, & late-blooming Sedums or where an evergreen plant is needed.

Special features: Cold Hardy, Color Change, Drought Tolerant, Easy Care, Evergreen, Foliage Interest, Multi-seasonal Interest, Pest Resistant, Winter Interest

Soil: Likes moist, well-drained soils, but it is very adaptable to poor, dry, thin soils in sun and wind-exposed sites.
Light: Full sun to part shade - Some sources rate this plant as full shade tolerant and not adaptable to full sun, but experience does not bear these claims out.
Water: Water regularly until established. Drought tolerant in cold climates. In the South, you may need to water during the dog days, unless your soil is moisture-retentive.
Spacing: You can plant at almost any spacing as plants will fill in over time.
Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow release fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
Winterizing: No special care needed. Shed autumn leaves can be raked from the plant without damage to it.
Maintenance & pruning: Only a few years after planting, you will need to prune. Do this in early spring so that new growth will cover the stubs of cut branches.
