Dianthus Eastern Star Description

Dianthus Eastern Star is one of the best when it comes to Dianthus.  Selected for prolific blooms, intense fragrance, numerous flowers, beautiful foliage - you can't go wrong with this tough, durable Drought Tolerant Ground Cover

This Dianthus supports short, strong stems that produce hundreds  of shocking red flowers with dark centers that face upward so you can enjoy them even more!

Dianthus make a great cut flower.  Although short stemmed there is no compromise on fragrance. Indulge yourself with perfume bouquets nestled around your home.

This is by far one of the best evergreen ground covers for a sunny spot.  The dense, narrow and tightly compact blue-green leaves form a solid mat and does not rot out in the center like older Dianthus varieties do.

Combine this sun loving perennial with low growing Sedums. Use as a foreground planting to reblooming Daylilies, fragrant Coneflowers, or long-blooming Knock Out Roses.

Special Features: Butterfly Lovers, Cold Hardy, Cut Flower, Deer Resistant, Disease Resistant, Drought Tolerant, Easy Care, Evergreen, Fast Growing, Fragrance, Heat Tolerant, Pest Resistant,

PLANTING GUIDE

Soil: Neutral to alkaline well drained loam or sand.
Light: Full sun is preferred but will tolerate part shade though the blooms might not be as prolific.
Water: Average water needs. Drought tolerant once established, but should be watered regularly during extended drought conditions.
Spacing: 12 inches
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, timed release fertilizer in early spring.
Winterizing: Remove all the dead and fallen plant matter so that diseases do not overwinter in it. A four inch mulch layer of straw or pine boughs will help protect the soil temperature, and keep the frost from heaving the roots. Remove the mulch in spring when they begin actively growing again.
Maintenance & Pruning: Little to no pruning or maintenance needed. Deadheading is highly recommended to promote a reflush of flowers. Clumps can be divided every 2 or 3 years to encourage better flower production.
