Soil: Easily grown in any average well drained soil. Bulbs can rot in wet, soggy soils.
Light: Full sun to partial shade. At least six to eight hours of sunlight is best. In warmer zones, morning sun and afternoon shade is preferred.
Water: Water bulbs after planting if the soil is dry. Bulbs will grow their root system in the fall so the soil will need to be kept moist. Avoid overwatering. Once the ground freezes do not water until spring.
Spacing: Spacing can vary depending on preference. Bulbs should be spaced about three inches apart. For maximum impact, dig one hole about 10" wide and place 5 bulbs in it. This creates a nice full cluster. Tulip bulbs should be planted about 6" deep in the soil.
Fertilizing: A granular 10-10-10 or bulb specific fertilizer can be added to the top of the soil after planting. Reapply fertilizer in the spring when the foliage appears and again in the fall. Bone meal is not recommended.
Winterizing: If desired, an inch or two of mulch can be added after frost and removed before the plants emerge in the spring.
Maintenance & pruning: Leaves should be left on the plant until they have died, then trimmed to ground level. Pruning green foliage will reduce the nutrients available to the plant the following year.
