Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. Description One look and you will fall in love! 'Aphrodite' sweetshrub (Calycanthus hybrid) from Proven Winners is one of those plants that, once you've seen it, you must have it. Big, cupped flowers in summer look like a dark red magnolia. They begin to appear in early summer and here in Michigan, continue to bloom all summer long (in hot climates, they may taper off during the height of summer). This is a very large shrub, covered in big, glossy, green leaves, so it's perfect for seasonal coverage or privacy. As you may guess by its name, sweetshrub is generally fragrant, but the scent varies widely depending on the age of the bloom, the time of day, and the weather. We think they smell like apples warmed by the sun, but other people smell different things (pineapple, bubblegum) and others smell nothing at all. It's an adventure in fragrance! However, it will re-emerge from the roots. This is why there is such a wide range of height and width on this plant. Expect it to become quite large in warmer climates.
Maintenance: This plant can be pruned as needed, but as it matures, controlling its height may become difficult. Prune in spring, before the new growth begins to emerge, if you wish. Makes a very nice cut flower.
