Description

ATHENA GOLD™ false sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) features the cheery golden yellow blooms you’ve come to expect of this native perennial, but does it all in a smaller, more compact habit. This makes it extra versatile in the landscape, great for tucking between other perennials, adding a splash of golden color at the base of shrubs, or brightening a patio container. Dozens of golden yellow petals surround ATHENA GOLD™’s bright center, which practically beckons the local pollinators to visit it. It’s also neat, drought-tolerant, and cut flowers last for weeks in arrangements.

With cold and heat tolerance in the landscape, false sunflower is a durable perennial you can always count on to welcome summer into your garden. The cheery flowers add a unique texture, creating a joyful contrast in mixed garden beds or borders. Once established, this perennial will be able to handle periods of drought and maintain its appearance.

How to Grow

Soil: Average, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Good soil drainage is essential. Wet soils in winter can be fatal, so keep an eye on your plants after heavy snowfall.
Light: Does well in full sun. Tolerates some light shade, particularly in hot summer climates or when grown in dry soils.
Water: Dry to medium -- Water regularly until established.
Spacing: 32 inches apart.
Fertilizing: Spring application of a timed-release, or organic fertilizer
Winterizing: No special care needed. May leave spent blooms on plants over winter for reseeding, and provide interest to birds in the winter garden. Clean up spent foliage in early spring as plants emerge.
Maintenance & pruning: Deadheading is not required for continuous bloom, but old flowers may be cut off if desired.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
