Description

Who knew a dogwood could add such insane character and architectural interest to the shade garden? Walt Stackman, the discoverer of Golden Shadows® Pagoda Dogwood, that's who! With bright yellow and green variegated, heart-shaped leaves and a stately horizontal habit, it's sure to draw attention. This is especially so in spring when new growth flushes out reddish-orange, and flat lacy flowers elevate its look. This small tree is a fun native option for bringing interest into woodland gardens or bland shady spots.

How to Grow

Soil: Grows best in well-draining, acidic soil and can adapt to clay soil.
Light: Prefers placement in part sun, but can be grown in full shade. Its best leaf color is produced with a bit more sun, but full sun is best avoided.
Water: Needs moist soil, but does not enjoy overwatering.
Spacing: 10-12 feet apart
Fertilizing: Does not require feeding or fertilizer. If action is desired, a bit of mulch or compost spread over the soil in spring could be helpful.
Winterizing: No special care is needed to prepare for winter.
Maintenance & pruning: It maintains a strong horizontal shape without help, so pruning is unnecessary. But if required, prune after flowering as blooms are produced on old wood.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
