Description

Pink Piñata™ abelia is the party, and you’re invited! This newest abelia from Proven Winners Colorchoice Shrubs features hundreds of trumpet-shaped pink blooms that resemble confetti in a smaller, more compact size than other abelia varieties, making it easy to tuck into empty spaces in garden beds, small borders, or even sunny patio containers. The fragrant flowers attract pollinators, but deer, rabbits, and disease keep away from this shrub. Plus, very little trimming is needed for Pink Piñata™ to maintain its tidy habit.

Abelias are popular deer-resistant landscape shrubs that are evergreen in southern climates. This shrub’s drought tolerance and ease of care make it popular among landscapers and plant enthusiasts, especially in the South, though it is adaptable to various soil and light conditions in both warm and cold climates.

How to Grow

Soil: Abelia is adaptable to a range of soil types and will tolerate periods of dry soil. Best growth is in moist, well-drained soils; benefits from mulch in the landscape.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part sun (4-6 hours sun)
Water: Moderate moisture; tolerates dry conditions once established, but flowering is best when not stressed.
Spacing: Min 4' apart.
Fertilizing: Seldom needed; apply a granular garden or rose fertilizer in early spring if desired.
Winterizing: A 2-3"" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended. In colder areas, site away from strong winds.
Maintenance & pruning: Prune in early spring if necessary. Trimming in summer removes flowers but will encourage colorful new growth.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
