Description

Add rich, dramatic color to your fall landscape with Rock' N Grow®' Midnight Velvet' stonecrop (Sedum). This newest addition to the Rock N Grow® collection features clusters of rich red flowers that begin blooming in late summer, completely smothering the dark purple foliage by fall. Because 'Midnight Velvet' blooms later in the gardening season, it serves as a great season extender in mixed borders or as a late-season nectar source for pollinators as other resources begin to dwindle. After the rosy-red flowers finish blooming, the spent seedheads stay standing, providing interesting texture to the winter landscape.

Stonecrops are remarkably drought and heat-tolerant perennials, and Rock' N Grow®' Midnight Velvet' is no exception. It's tough as nails and grows well in challenging sites. For the darkest foliage, make sure you plant it in full sun (even in hot zones) and watch it thrive!

How to Grow

Soil: Thrives in average, well-drained soils. Performs well in sandy to gravelly soils of moderate to low fertility.
Light: Does best in full sun, but appreciates some afternoon shade in harsh sun and heat exposure in very hot summer regions.
Water: Requires medium to dry conditions, and is drought-tolerant once established. Will not tolerate over-watering.
Spacing: Minimum 30 inches apart.
Fertilizing: Does not commonly need fertilizer.
Winterizing: Does not need mulch in the winter. Foliage can be left standing if desired.
Maintenance & Pruning: Clear old foliage away from new growth in spring. Can be deadheaded in late summer or early fall.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
