Description

Variegated Sweet Flag (Acorus gramineus) features long green leaves with creamy white variegation. The foliage looks like it is striped! It's semi-evergreen, keeping its color year-round in warmer climates. Originating from the wetlands of Asia, sweet flag grows best in wet soils near water or even in standing water. Try planting it alongside streams and ponds or in rain gardens. Though this perennial looks like an ornamental grass, looks can be deceiving! Sweet flag is not a grass, but serves a similar purpose in the garden.

Details

Botanical name: Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus'
Common name: Variegated sweet flag, grassy-leaved sweet flag
Zone: 5-8
Sun exposure: Sun (6+ hours sun) to part sun (4-6 hours sun)
Height x width: 1' X 1'
Foliage color: Green and white variegation
Season of Interest: Spring - fall
Uses: Accent, alpine and rock, container gardening, edging, erosion control or embankment, ground cover, massing, ornamental, rain garden, slopes, small spaces, water.

How to Grow

Soil: Easily grown in average, medium to wet soil. Grows particularly well in wet soil, even in standing water.
Light: Full sun (>6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Water: Prefers to grow in wet soils. Do not let the soil dry out.
Spacing: 1 foot
Fertilizing: Fertilizer is generally unnecessary, but if your plant looks deficient or is growing slowly, apply a slow-release fertilizer. If you are planting near bodies of water, be careful when choosing fertilizers.
Winterizing: Semi-evergreen in warm climates. Cut back foliage before winter in colder climates.
Maintenance & Pruning: About every 3-4 years, propagate by division of the clump into several pieces in early spring (after shearing the dead foliage away) and discard the center of the clump (and any other peripheral portions which have died).

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
