Yezberry® Maxie™ Japanese Haskap (Lonicera)

Why plant a plain old hedge when you could plant a hedge full of delicious fruit? That's exactly what you can do with Yezberry Maxie Japanese haskap (Lonicera caerulea). Named in honor of breeder Dr. Maxine Thompson, this full-sized Japanese haskap is super hardy, super easy to grow, and super tasty. It does not need any special soil, fertilizer, spraying, or pruning to bear big crops of luscious berries each summer (mid-late June for us here in Michigan). Flowering begins in very early spring and berries develop over the course of the next months until they're ready to harvest. How do the berries taste? A bit like a cross between a raspberry and a blueberry, though they aren't related to either of those notoriously-finicky-to-grow plants. They have the sweetness of a raspberry with a hint of pleasant tartness. We also love that the skin kind of dissolves when you eat them - it doesn't come off and stick to your teeth like a blueberry does. The seeds are tiny but don't get stuck in your teeth like raspberries. They are delicious and definitely worth growing! Note: pollinator is required. Plant any of the other Yezberry varieties within 50' of this one for pollination. Both plants will get fruit.
