Description

Yuki Cherry Blossom® deutzia (Deutzia x) appears as a cloud of dainty pink blooms in spring – but don't let its delicate appearance fool you. It's an extremely tough, problem-solving shrub that graces your landscape year after year with practically no work. This sun-loving shrub resists deer and is a highly adaptable plant; try planting them in a mass to create a stunning pink display or as ground cover on a sunny slope. This Proven Winners ColorChoice shrub took over ten years to develop, and the results are stunning, with sweet cherry blossom tones that pair especially nicely with spring bulbs and creeping phlox. The show doesn't stop in spring! Its neat habit turns a rich red-plum color in fall, adding to the distinctive beauty this compact shrub provides.

How to Grow

Soil: Plant in any well-drained spot. Can take some dryness, but blooms last longest if it does not dry out in spring.
Light: Full sun (6+ hrs/day) is best; part shade (4-6 hrs/day) is okay, especially in warmer areas.
Water: Average
Space: Min. 2' apart
Fertilizing: Little fertilizer is needed.
Winterizing: No special treatment is required; 2-3" of mulch is recommended.
Maintenance & Pruning: Blooms on old wood, which means that any pruning should be done after bloom. If plants become thin and scraggly, cut back to just a few inches high after bloom for a flush of lush new growth.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
