Description

Interstella® Lily-of-the-Valley Shrub (Pieris japonica) brings out of this world beauty to your landscape or garden! It's a sophisticated, shade-tolerant flowering evergreen that is one of the very first, and longest, shrubs to bloom each spring. And what a show it is: elegant chains of delicate bell-shaped florets of a deep pink instead of the usual white. After several weeks of flowering, star-like bursts of bright red new growth festoon the branches. Interstella® Lily-of-the-Valley Shrub is also deer resistant, making it a problem-solver in the landscape. It requires acidic soil and benefits from a good layer of shredded bark mulch. Though a touch slow-growing, this beautiful shrub packs so much showiness into its compact size, it's more than worth the wait.

How to Grow

Soil: Requires acidic soil. Soils that are cool, moist, and rich in organic matter are highly beneficial.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun); tolerates shade but flowers best with some sun.
Water: Average soil moisture is sufficient; avoid wet or very dry conditions.
Spacing: 3- 4 feet apart, or as needed
Fertilizing: A granular fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs, like a rose fertilizer, is recommended.
Winterizing: In zones 5 and 6, it is best planted in an area protected from harsh winter winds. A good 2-3" layer of shredded bark mulch is recommended.
Maintenance & Pruning: Major pruning is not recommended, as it does not recover well from such treatment. It can be lightly shaped in late spring if desired.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

bush distance

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
