Description

Get the privacy you've always wanted with Emerald Green Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis). We love this arborvitae's narrow, pyramidal habit, which quickly grows to create an elegant evergreen screen. This rapidly growing evergreen shrub can grow over 18" per year when given proper care! The green foliage is exceptionally fragrant and provides year-round interest, especially for the holidays. Emerald Green Arborvitae is highly adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions and will thrive in sandy and heavy clay garden soils. Once established, it can handle high heat and mild drought, making it a great fit for gardens in the South. A simple shearing in early spring is all it takes to keep this colorful, adaptable, and fragrant evergreen shrub in bounds!

Note: Ships at an average size of 30-33 inches tall, floor to tip.

Soil: Tolerates a wide range of soil types but grows best in moist, well-draining soils.
Light: Sun (> 6 hours sun) to part-sun (4-6 hours sun)
Water: Keep moist, but do not overwater. It can handle mild drought once established.
Spacing: 2 - 3 ft
Fertilizing: If desired, top dress in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer.
Winterizing: Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder zones. Tolerates wind once established and withstands heavy ice or snow. It may darken or turn bronze slightly in the winter.
Maintenance & pruning: Requires little or no pruning but can be sheared easily if necessary. Remove any dieback following winter. It can handle a light trimming to the desired size or shape.

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

bush distance

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:
